Here’s another in a series of remembrances from PUNK UNDER THE SUN readers. This one’s from Brad Lackey, aka Scott Drop aka Last Lackey. To be clear, this is Brad Lackey the punker—no relation to “Bad Brad” Lackey the motocross racer who won championships in the 1970s and early ‘80s and who grew up in Pinole, CA, where punker Brad currently lives. Got that? Just a strange coincidence.
“I lived in the Tampa area from 1984 to 1988 before relocating to San Francisco. Went to a lot of shows in Tampa/St. Pete but did drive down to the Cameo once (‘87 or ‘88) with No Fraud when they played with Scream. One of the guys from Conflict (UK) was their roadie (I think), and he would not shut the fuck up about how he was going through a divorce. Unfortunately, I had to sleep next to Dave Grohl on the floor that night.
“I moved back to Miami in the mid ‘90s and went to a lot of great shows and eventually put out records by Kreamy ‘Lectric Santa and the Stun Guns. Huge fan of Florida punk.
[Brad founded Shut Up Records in 2003, releasing the LP And There Was Nothing We Could Do about It… by the Stun Guns in 2003 and the 7-inch “Great Plans Laid to Rest” by K’LS in 2004. According to Discogs, most of the Stun Gun tracks were originally recorded at Tapeworm Studios in Miami in 1995 and ’96. In 2013 Brad passed Shut Up on to Josh Indar & Robin Indar of the bands Severance Package/Black Fork.]
“My wife Jocelyn and I have moved around a lot over the past six years—Oregon, Texas, Florida—and are just now getting around to unpacking crap after being back in the Bay Area for the past two years. But here are a couple of pictures, and some old flyers from the Cuban Club in Tampa from 1986. The guy with the mohawk and cat is me in Florida in 1987 I think. Then there’s my old friends JP and Leif (both deceased). The group shot is from is 1988 or ’89, when I had moved to SF. I am the one with the short hair on the right and the other two people are Adam and Sarah, both from Saint Paul MN.
“Anyway, got the book and will let you know what I think when I get a chance to sit down and dig through.”
P.S. According to Brad, “Robert [Price] and Pryia [Ray] from K’LS are doing OK and living in Asheville, NC. Andrew Powell [also from K’LS] passed away in 2003, Buddha from Stun Guns is in Chattanooga, TN. George Kelley [also from Stun Guns] is in Philadelphia, and Paul Lecours [Guns] fell off the deep end and I think is in Denver the last I heard….”
